Torrential Rain and Landslides Ravage Wayanad

In Wayanad, Kerala, heavy rain has triggered a massive landslide, burying more than 100 people under debris. Rescue efforts are underway to save those trapped. So far, over 20 people, including three children, have tragically lost their lives.

On Tuesday, devastating landslides struck high-altitude villages in Wayanad, leaving homes destroyed, rivers overflowing, and trees uprooted. The picturesque villages of Mundakkai, Churalamala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha are now cut off from the rest of the region. Vehicles swept away by floodwaters are stuck in tree branches or submerged. Rivers have changed their courses, flowing through residential areas and causing further destruction.

Large boulders rolling down hills are blocking rescue workers’ paths. Amid heavy rain, rescuers are transporting the injured and deceased to ambulances. Authorities report that in Wayanad district alone, the landslides have claimed the lives of eight people, including three children.

In Churalamala, four people, including a child, died. In Thondarnad village, a one-year-old from a Nepali family perished. Near Pothukal village, the bodies of three people, including a five-year-old, were found close to a riverbank.
